'Many Voices, One World: Communication and Society, Today and Tomorrow - The MacBride Report.'
Sean MacBride, et al.
Kogan Page/Unipub/Unesco, 1980. 1988 Reprint
Very important historical report commissioned by Unesco that caused much controversy when it was eventually published, as it went beyond its given remit and suggested media be made accessible to all, not just in the hands of the few.

'Community Media - Community Communication in the UK: video, local TV, film and photography'
Heinz Nigg and Graham Wade

'The No-Nonsense Guide to Global Media'
Peter Steven, Verso, 2003
Very easy to read, (but also very in-depth and scholarly), pocket size overview of mass media around the world, ending with a case for the growth of wider democratisation of the media. Although he doesn't use the term directly, he suggests the spread of community media activity with a political agenda to counter the hegemony that exists in the current media climate around the world.
